This year, HIP HOP for HIV, MOCAH and The T.R.U.T.H Project will join with Alere to help HIP HOP participants create works of art and in exchange Alere will donate one HIV Clearview Test Kit for each artwork completed to communities that cannot afford HIV testing. We are looking for artists to volunteer and help the kids create the best works possible. Tons or art supplies will be on hand to make this experience unique, fun and rewarding. Together, we can help Houston change the way we look at the (+) sign. HIV
When someone gets HIV, the body”s immune system makes antibodies to try to fight the infection. Most HIV tests available today test for HIV antibodies. If HIV antibodies are present, it means that a person is infected with HIV. A rapid HIV test using blood will be performed. The rapid HIV test being done at the Hip Hop for HIV testing events will require a blood sample to be drawn. Your test results will be available the same day you test.
Syphilis
The test is looking for presence of Treponema pallidum, the bacterium that causes syphilis. Syphilis is an infectious disease that is most often spread by sexual contact, such as through direct contact with a syphilis sore (chancre). It is easily treated but can cause severe health problems if left untreated. The syphilis test being done at the Hip Hop for HIV testing events will require a blood sample to be drawn. Your test results will be available the same day you test.

Gonorrhea
The test is looking for presence of the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which causes the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that more than 700,000 people in the U.S. get new gonorrheal infections each year, but only half of these infections get reported to the CDC. In the US, the highest reported rates of infection are among sexually active teenagers, young adults, and African Americans. The gonnorhea test being done at the Hip Hop for HIV testing events will require a urine sample to be given. Your test results will be available 14 days after your test date by calling 832-393-5010 Monday-Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm. The deadline to call for results is August 24, 2012. If you receive a call from the Health Department please return the call and follow the given instructions.

Chlamydia
The test is looking for evidence of infection by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Chlamydia is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the United States and is especially common among people 15 to 25 years of age. It is estimated that 3 million Americans are infected with chlamydia each year, although this number may be higher. Since many people do not experience any symptoms, cases often go undiagnosed and unreported; still, over 1 million new cases are reported each year. Diagnosing and treating chlamydia is very important to prevent long-term complications and spread of the infection to others. The chlamydia test being done at the Hip Hop for HIV testing events will require a urine sample to be given. Your test results will be available 14 days after your test date by calling 832-393-5010 Monday-Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm. The deadline to call for results is August 24, 2012. Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C tests are used to detect and diagnose an infection and/or to monitor the treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV). Tests are used to detect the condition if a person:
- Has been exposed to someone with HCV
- Participates in high risk behaviors such as injecting street drugs
- Has abnormal liver function tests
- Has symptoms associated with liver disease, such as jaundice, dark urine, nausea, or unexpected weight gain or loss
Most people newly infected with HCV have no symptoms or ones that are so mild that they rarely prompt a person to visit a doctor and get tested for HCV. However, about 10-20% of people may experience symptoms such as fatigue, pain in the abdominal area, decreased appetite, and jaundice and may be tested for HCV. Your test results will be available the same day you test.

HIP HOP for HIV Awareness is definitely a COMMUNITY event. No one organization can do it alone. We have many partners who come together every summer to test over 8,000 people! And we need you. Sign up today and share your talents with us.
Below is a list of volunteer opportunities. Come as an individual or invite your church, sorority, fraternity or business networking group to participate for a day. Your involvement will let the youth and young adults of our city know that you care about them and their health.
- Greeter/Navigator – responsible for directing participants to the appropriate location in a friendly and respectful manner.
- Operations – responsible for the smooth operation of the event. Will be assigned to areas as needed.
- Registration – responsible for ensuring each participant is registered to receive services in a timely manner.
- Phlebotomy – responsible for collection of blood samples. CMA or registered nurses required.
- Education – responsible for providing accurate andup-to-date HIV/STD education in a culturally sensitive manner. Successful completion of the Fundamentals of HIV/STD course is required.
